A city is made up of the past and present, of memories as much as concrete, just underneath the city’s surface dwell stories and mysteries to be discovered. It is these stories and memories I hope to make visible and share with the larger public through a text-based work online.

As part of a project for LA Metro’s Purple Line subway station, I am making a text-based work made up of contributions from friends, strangers, friends-of-friends, you…

If you would like to participate, please email me at iremember2021@ gmail.com with your text that begins with the phrase “I remember”.

You can include a first name, or a last name, but not both.

All contributions will be used anonymously, and the project will be presented as a text by many authors.

The inspiration for this project is Joe Brainard’s 1970 book, “I Remember” – a wonderful, unconventional autobiography that is structured with 172 entries, each prefaced with the same refrain: “I remember…”.

Please submit as many as you’d like, and please share this invite.

Your text can be about the long ago past or a more recent memory, personal or public, each memory contributes a new layer of meaning to this shared history.

When the station and artwork are completed, the texts will be accessible online via a QR code at the station.
